these photographers capture decaying and repurposed theatres across america
Most of us have seen images of formerly grandiose (and now kind of creepy) abandoned buildings before. These dark, dank, decaying buildings usually look like they belong in a horror film. What happens, though, when the dishevelled structures are converted into gyms, markets and grocery stores instead?
The work of French photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre answers this. Between 2005 and 2021, they snapped hundreds of movie theatres across America. Many of the once impressive structures, which were built in the early 20th century, lay abandoned, their paint peeling and crushed-velvet seats crumbling. Others, however, have been turned into everything from car parks to supermarkets, and the result is rather strange.
