six unique museums you can visit here in australia

When it comes to museums, we reckon that we Aussies are pretty spoiled for choice. Want to look at some neato art? Pop down to Melbourne/Naarm and visit the NGV or take the ferry down to Hobart/Nipaluna to see MONA. Keen to cast your peepers on some dinos? Canberra/Ngambri is home to the National Dinosaur Museum (as well as the always iconic Questacon).

But if your interests veer a tad closer to the quirky side, you're in luck: we've got weird museums out the wazoo! Ranging from huge collections of pinball machines to learning about the origins of an iconic spread, peep our picks below.

MUSUEM OF UNDERWATER ART – QUEENSLAND The ocean is already pretty dang beautiful, but add in some hand-made sculptures and boy howdy – it becomes ethereal. This sculpture garden in Townsville is home to a selection of sculptures only accessible via scuba-diving or snorkeling, making it one of the most unique museums you could ever experience. Check out their website this-a-way if you want to see it for yourself.

POOSEUM – TASMANIA Ever wondered about the science of poo? We can't blame you if you'd rather steer clear of such subjects, but after taking a visit down to the Pooseum (we have to give them credit for such a great name) we reckon you might think a bit differently. Learn about scatological stuff by popping by their website and booking a visit.

GRIFFITHS SEA SHELL MUSEUM – VICTORIA We're heading back to the sea for a hot minute with this one, since this Gippsland museum boasts one of the largest collections of sea shells in the whole country – over 90,000, to be exact. Learn about shells and their critter inhabitants by seeing it for yourself, so take a gander over by their website to find out how to get there.

THE BIG CAMERA – WESTERN AUSTRALIA Calling all shutterbugs: this quirky museum is right up your alleys. Firstly, the dang building is shaped like a literal huge camera (amazing) and secondly, it's home to a wide array of still-operating cameras, camera equipment and heaps of interesting history tidbits – what's not to love? Learn more about The Big Camera over here

CYRIL CALLISTER FOUNDATION – VICTORIA Ah, Vegemite. Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying that the spread is a bona fide Aussie icon (arguably, our most iconic icon). Take a visit down to Beauford and visit the Cyril Callister Foundation – a museum dedicated to the history and memorabilia of Vegemite. Plus, you can stock up on your own supply while you're at it. Their website is here

AUSTRALIAN PINBALL MUSEUM – VICTORIA Do you consider yourself a pinball wizard? Well, it's imperative that you feast your eyes on this ripper collection of pinball machines located in Campbellfield, Victoria. You can even try your hand at playing these colourful beauties for as low as $1, so what other persuasion do you possibly need!? Learn more about the Australian Pinball Museum here.

We hope you enjoyed our list of quirky Aussie museums. While we have you, why not take a gander at some international unique museums or a list of the best walking trails across the country?
