nanako kume makes lamp shades out of giant pencil shavings

These aren’t the remains of a sharpened pencil that have been artfully tacked to a piece of string. No, these are lamp shades made by the clever Japanese designer Nanako Kume.

To create her arty pendant lights, Nanako uses a wood-shaving device that, put simply, is a giant pencil sharpener. Pretty cool, eh?

Nanako says her crafty designs are inspired by the “shape and fragility” of pencil shavings, which have fascinated her since she was a kid. “I thought that by increasing the size and thickness of what must be discarded as waste, it would be possible to create new products while maintaining the beauty of the shape,” she says on Instagram.

Unfortunately we can't get our greedy mitts on Nanako's rad designs just yet, but we can admire her craftsmanship. Check out the video below to see exactly how she makes her cool stuff.
