a frankie photographer’s guide for a dreamy weekend in SA
Whether you’re a planner or a see-where-the-day-takes-us traveller, when you head to South Australia you’d be a fool to not consider frankie photographer Bri Hammond’s top recommendations. She has an eye for the cutest spots, but also insider knowledge after having grown up on the Eyre Peninsula and recently returning to the state to live in Adelaide after over a decade in Melbourne. Here are Bri’s top picks for a fun and relaxing visit to SA.
EXPLORE THE HIDDEN BEACHES OF THE EYRE PENINSULA People often think you have to go up north for good beaches, but honestly I’ve never experienced beaches like the ones on the Eyre Peninsula anywhere in Australia. You often have them all to yourself! The great thing about the Tumby Bay area in particular is that there's lots of these little mini peninsulas, with beaches on either side. So depending on the weather, you can choose a sheltered one or a more open one. My favourites are the small beaches around Lipson Cove. I'm the kind of person that's the first to get in the water, and the last to get out; floating while looking at the sky and bobbing in the waves is honestly my happy place! There's great snorkelling all around, excellent fishing (ask a local what 'dabbing' is), and sheltered spots for water sports (I'm definitely more of a sea biscuit person than a skier though).
STAY AT A CUTE SHACK BASICALLY ON THE BEACH I was lucky enough to take photos of The Harvester’s Moon in Perlubie recently and I can’t wait to go back and stay for at least a week. The house is just so unique and cosy. The lounge room is all 1970s style with a plush pink corduroy couch and a record player. You can’t even really see your neighbours! It's got this huge scrub land out the front of it with a fire-pit in the middle – perfect for toasting marshmallows while stargazing! It’s the kind of place where you can stay for a week and really switch off. You have a beach right out the front.
CLIMB THE SAND DUNES AT COFFIN BAY NATIONAL PARK These sand dunes are where I shot my ‘Dune Daze’ fashion editorial for frankie. It's one of my favourite spots in the world! You need to drive for 40 minutes over sand dunes to get to the beach, which is an adventure in itself. When you get there, you’ll see people sand boarding and also people fishing for salmon right off the beach. It's an amazing landscape that I've never seen anywhere else in Australia before.
SEE A SHOW OR SOME LOCAL ART AT THE MILL This is where you’ll find those hidden gems outside the big galleries. It’s more of a grassroots approach to art. You know there’s always going to be something fun you haven’t seen before at The Mill. I’m one of the 57 artists working out of the studios. I've really found my community there and I relish the everyday delight of feeling welcome and embraced by a place and its people. It’s worth taking a look at their public program to see what’s on when you visit.
RELAX ON THE LAWN WITH A WINE AT ALPHA BOX AND DICE This McLaren Vale winery always stands out to me because it has such a cool, eclectic vibe and the best wine. It’s like all the best parts of an op shop exploded on the wall! Alpha Box and Dice is my go-to place to take visitors with big, beautiful trees out the front, wine tasting flights and snacks to devour while sitting on the grass. As a graphic designer in my early 20s, I was always drawn to the concept and design of the wine bottles too. My favourite wine currently is the Wendy Pinot Noir. A great take-home present idea!
STAY AT A DREAMY ABODE IN THE LESSER-KNOWN WINE REGION Also in McLaren Vale is Ingoldby Road, a beautiful Mid-Century gem of a house that you can stay at! I stayed there recently with some girlfriends, which was the perfect base because you could easily get around to lots of different wineries as well as being close enough to the city and beaches. Plus, it’s stunning! It's my ideal dream house: all beautiful, warm colours and tones; mid-century design with a stone wall at the front; beautiful, big windows; a little fireplace. Perfection! I got to do a puzzle for the first time since being a parent… the space and time to relax enough to complete a 500-piecer is truly one of life’s simple pleasures, and South Australia offers so many opportunities to experience them.
