what does your favourite y2k fashion game say about you?

frankie contributor and Y2K enthusiast, Allie King, explores the wild world of early-internet dress up games.

A multitude of fashion girlies developed their love of clothing and their personal style through playing the Y2K fashion games of their youth. From dressing up Paris Hilton on Stardoll, to envisioning their own clothing brand on Barbie Fashion Designer and dreaming about the day when you were allowed to wear makeup while getting Sasha ready for a night on the town in Bratz Makeover, if you have grown to have taste, odds are that these games were a large part of your childhood.

But have you ever wondered how these games have influenced your style, interests and personality growing up into adulthood?

We have curated hyper specific personality descriptions based on your favourite Y2K fashion game. Let us know how much your game of choice shaped you!

My Scene: Makeover Studio/Barbie Makeover Studio These girlies – without a doubt – woke up early in the hopes of copping the Sandy Liang x Baggu collab. Romance novels are their vice, specifically Emily Henry, and even more specifically Book Lovers. The words: “wanna get a sweet treat?” are their lifeforce. They probably have a trinket addiction, are avid scrapbookers and looooove clustercore. They give off 'Boy Genius winter', 'Chappell Roan summer' energy. If they had the money to shop anywhere they wanted, their wardrobe would consist of Damson Madder, Ruby NZ, and Ganni. Also, they love an orange wine.

Stardoll is the most sublime way to waste your time while bed-rotting. The Stardoll girlies are likely to be listening to Preacher’s Daughter by Ethel Cain while reading either My Year of Rest and Relaxation or Bunny. They love core-core videos on TikTok. Their Letterboxd top four might include, Lisa Frankenstein, Coraline, Bodies Bodies Bodies and 10 Things I Hate About You. And they absolutely devoured Julia Fox’s memoir Down the Drain. Their ideal outing is spending hours aimlessly walking around thrifting, and then rewarding themselves with a paloma to celebrate a hard day's shopping.

Barbie Fashion Designer Every marketing girlie grew up playing Barbie Fashion Designer. They have the Rhode Lip Case, and love an iced oat latte. They are (regretfully) straight, and are also deeply in love with Paul Mescal, an obsession that started with Normal People and the flame of love is stoked every time a picture of him in his running shorts is posted online. Chilli margs are these girlies drink of choice, and their fave store is Djerf Avenue. Reapplying the Summer Friday’s Lip Oil is one of the highlights of their day.

Covet Fashion girlies rise! These girlies are likely to have an Aperol spritz or Stanley Cup in their hands. They have been Harry Styles fans since 2010 and feel very secure in their choice to this day and they bemoan the fact that they aren’t called Olivia or Matilda. They swear by CeraVe skincare. Hockey Smut books like the Off Campus Series and Icebreaker are their not-so-guilty pleasure. They are always the one at a dinner to suggest getting the burrata. They also somehow go on mysteriously funded months-long trips to Europe every summer. The ultimate chameleons, they oscillate between 'clean girl' and 'rockstar's girlfriend' aesthetics  depending on the occasion.

Bratz Makeover The art of the cut crease was mastered by the Bratz Makeover lovers at the age of 16. They go on yearly trips to Japan. Their bags are always adorned with a purse pal. Rikki was their favourite mermaid in H20: Just Add Water growing up. They compulsively rewatch Gossip Girl. They love a book with a ‘there's only one bed’ trope. They will somehow incorporate “I’m working late / ‘cause I’m a singer” into every conversation you have with them. Also, they foam at the mouth at the mention of rigatoni ala vodka.

Polly Pocket’s Wacky Wardrobe If you were a Polly Pocket’s Wacky Wardrobe fan, you give off the energy of someone who had cow print wallpaper in their room in 2020. They have taste and think that Olivia Dean and Remi Wolf need to be the next big pop girlies. Watched Girls at an impressionable age and it shaped much of their personality, and now they are a brat. They guzzle Coke Zero’s like they're going out of style. They always talk up moving to either London or Copenhagen. They're video essay enthusiasts and love Shanspere and Nicole Rafiee. Moo Deng is their current hyperfixation. They are 'thought daughters'.
