tunesday – yorke’s break-up playlist
The popstar shares eight songs to get you through break-up season.
Break-up songs are pretty much a genre of music unto themself. There’s the melancholic kind, the revenge kind, the bitter kind, and then there’s Yorke’s kind. The Aussie muso is turning heartbreak on its head with “break up season” – an irresistible pop song that finds the euphoria in the heartbreak. We stole Yorke’s iPod to find out what tracks she’s putting on her own break-up playlist, and safe to say we’ll be adding “break up season” to the queue.
"GOODBYE" BY SABRINA CARPENTER Our modern-day ABBA angel, this song has the perfect juxtaposition between heartbreaking lyrics and ‘screaming in the car to get over someone’ energy. It feels like the closing credits song to a relationship, but she retains the upper hand.
"CLICK CLACK SYMPHONY" BY RAYE I walked around Tokyo listening to this song on repeat recently and it was magical. It feels like getting ready for your first night out after a break-up – you want to feel hot but part of you is still holding onto the grief. Once your girls are around you, everything feels better.
"THIS IS FOR" BY TWICE Another anthem to feel powerful and for reclaiming yourself after a break-up. Sometimes you just need to dance it out.
"SEE THROUGH" BY THE BAND CAMINO Honestly one of my all-time favourite choruses. A song for when the person you love is not getting the message and putting you on the back burner. I’ve definitely scream-cried to this song in my car before.
"ROLLERCOASTER" BY BLEACHERS I’d recommend listening to this song whenever you need a pick-me-up. It’s so euphoric and impossible not to feel better after listening to it.
"BLUE MOON" BY ZARA LARSSON To me, this song feels like discovering someone new for the first time after you’ve had your heart broken. Hits you out of the blue.
"GREEN LIGHT" BY LORDE I wish I wrote this song. For me, this song perfectly articulates putting on an emotional mask while going through the break-up trenches, so close to feeling better but not quite there yet.
"MANCHILD" BY SABRINA CARPENTER I think the title says enough. Sometimes you’re better off without them.
