tunesday – who, what, when, where, why with baby cool

Baby Cool chats motherhood, music and the magic of love.

There’s no two ways about it: babies are on Grace Cuell’s brain. There’s the musician’s name, yes, being Baby Cool and all. Then there’s her new sophomore album, aptly named Infinity Baby. Oh! And there’s also the literal baby she just birthed. This trio of baby things has perfectly aligned in a sonic record of the moment that Baby Cool is currently living out – nursing a newborn babe just as Infinity Baby is birthed into the world. We caught up with the musician to pick her brain about everything that’s going on, including her spectacular new album.

Who is your biggest non-musical inspiration? I write a lot about how important my friendships are in shaping who I am and what I create. Other than that, I look to nature a lot. We have a lot to learn from the earth and its abundance of creativity.

What have the first steps into motherhood been like? I’m swimming through so many emotions in every minute of every day. It’s the most beautiful and terrifying thing I have ever done. I’ve never felt so much love and gratitude at the same time as complete exhaustion and fear of it all slipping through my fingers. I have been so held by my partner and my friends and family. My amazing village has made these first steps so much gentler than if I was trying to tackle it alone.

When did you write the first song on Infinity Baby? I wrote the song “Loop” not long after the release of my first album. We have played it live for a while and it has had a few different versions, but the album version is my favourite.

Where is the place you feel most at home? On my pottery wheel or in front of my sewing machine. Using my hands helps keep me grounded when my brain is moving at 100 miles an hour.

Why is the album called Infinity Baby? As a little girl, my greatest fear was the infinite. I have very vivid memories of lying awake at night and thinking about how nothing ever ends. It scared me so much. The album looks at the shadows and fears that are buried in my brain and helps me try and be OK with them.

Who was the first person who heard the album in full? Probably my producer Sam Joseph. He did such an amazing job on the production of this record and brought all of my vague ideas to life.

What is the coolest thing about having a baby? That we are just completely and utterly devoted to each other. It’s the most expansive love I’ve felt and it’s wild and scary and so, so special.

When is the right time to release music to the world? It will probably never feel perfect so anytime is the right time!

Where is your favourite place to perform music? I love to play outside when I can. Some of my favourite shows have been on outdoor festival stages where I can look at the clouds while I sing. Nature is magic.

Why do you make music? We’re all just being hurled around on a big rock in space and we can make sounds with our friends so why not.
