In the lead up to indie muso Matahara’s single launch for “Caroline” – the first slice of new music from the rad artist in almost two years – we stole a moment of the musician’s time to chat all things karaoke, comfort food and “Caroline” lyrics.

What is your favourite lyric from your new track “Caroline”? The lyrics in “Caroline” are quite random and sporadic. They’re not linear, which I think reflects how my brain works. I took different moments and put them all into one. But I think my favourite lyric would have to be, “A facade just collapsed onto me.” I think it’s quite poetic but also really simple. I think when you’re in a relationship, you just keep learning more and more about one another. It’s endless and sometimes can be surprising. 

Where is your favourite place to perform live? I’ve only played shows in Melbourne, some regional Victorian shows, and Brisbane so far, but I’d really love to play in Jakarta soon. I was born and raised there. I would love to see my friends and family in the crowd. That’d be so special! 

Where is your favourite holiday destination? Bandung, Indonesia. My parents are from there, so I used to go there a lot growing up. It’s just so nostalgic. The people are extremely cool and friendly. Their humour is out of this world, and the food… the food is just incomparable. I’m a big foodie!

What’s your favourite karaoke tune? Funnily enough, I don’t really do karaoke. But if I had to choose, maybe “If We Ever Meet Again” by Timbaland ft. Katy Perry. Super random, but that’s the first tune that came to mind haha! 

Where is your favourite place to write music? My room. On the floor with my guitar and no one around. I feel so free!

What’s your favourite comfort food? Definitely northern-style Vietnamese pho (their pickled garlic is to die for) or my mum’s ayam rica-rica (a fiery, spicy Indonesian chicken dish) paired with the most beautiful jasmine white rice. Those two always feel like home to me.

What’s your favourite way to wind down after a show? I’m usually very strict with myself leading up to a gig. But afterwards, I’d go wild. I’d take a shot, or have a couple of pints of beer, then sleep in (very important) and have a yummy, greasy breakfast. YOLO!

Who are your favourite local artists? My partner took me to a Sidney Phillips show last year. I don’t know much about rap, but that show was heartwarming and made me think, “The kids will be alright.” Also, Lucky. Such a cool and effortless girl. Even better live!
