tunesday – a chinwag with jack gray
We sat down with the super-lovely muso to pick his brain about all things music.
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before? My music combines storytelling with elements of indie-pop production. I produced my most recent album in my living room focusing on interesting melodies, catchy hooks and cool guitar parts.
What inspired your new track “Bluffin”? It is about someone who you think is into you, but they have all these walls up to try to not take the relationship too seriously and not let you in.
What led to your decision to move from Queensland to Los Angeles? You know, there is a lot of opportunity over there. I guess that was the first reason. It is where a lot of great producers and songwriters collaborate and I think I’ve gotten a lot out of being in that environment.
What was that experience like? Was there a bit of a culture shock? There was definitely a culture shock, but it wasn’t too bad. I surrounded myself with lots of like-minded people, so the transition felt seamless.
You’re touring with Maren Morris in early 2026. Which show are you most excited for and why? I am excited to get back to New Zealand because I love the people out there and they always know how to make a show fun. But really, I am just excited for all the shows. The venues are all pretty iconic and I am excited to play alongside Maren Morris.
When did you realise you wanted to seriously pursue music as a career? I think I kinda always knew. I was never really good at anything else. It's funny, as a kid, I never thought it was possible to make a living out of it – I just thought I’d do it until I couldn’t anymore. So far, so good.
What was the first album or artist you fell in love with? One of my earliest memories was listening to Busby Marou. Funny how the world works – Tom Busby is now one of my good mates and it’s cool to see that he’s still crushing it.
Who would be your dream collaborator? If I were to work with someone to produce for me, it would be Mk.gee. But if I were to produce for someone, I’d love to work with Joshua Slone.
Walk us through your songwriting process. It is different every time. Usually, I will get inspired by something, whether it be an experience or another song, and I will just play around in the studio until it evolves into something of its own. But I definitely do not have a formula of sorts. I just mess around until I get something that feels good.
Where could we typically find you on a Sunday arvo? I am usually watching a movie or an NBA game. But if I am not home, I am out grabbing a beer with friends.
What are you working on next? I’ve got a few tours coming up, so I am building out this live show for the Jeremy Zucker run. In 2026, I have lots of exciting things coming up. I will be on the road with Maren Morris supporting her in Australia and New Zealand and prepping for the release of my debut album.
Jack Gray’s new single “Bluffin” is out now. Catch the muso on tour with Good Neighbours in January.
