We were lucky enough to spend the day at Laneway Festival in Melbourne/Naarm last week – have a squiz below to find out who the stand-out musos of the day were.

JENSEN MCRAE After chatting to Californian singer-songwriter Jensen McRae in our latest frankie mag (issue 130 – nab one here!), we knew we had a lot to look forward to for the musician’s Laneway set – and she goddamn delivered! Playing a mix of tunes from her first two albums, she even included a special cover of Taylor Swift’s “Guilty as Sin?” Glorious!

ROLE MODEL If anyone was going to charm our cotton socks off, of course it was going to be Tucker Pillsbury – aka Role Model. Between chuckles and silly banter, Role Model delivered a whole lot of musical goodness, including the famous “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out”... featuring Rhian Teasdale from Wet Leg!

GEESE The band on every indie music-lover worth their salt’s lips, Geese cascaded through a set of musical genius on Friday night. The sunset twisting the sky between the gum trees behind the stage made a magical performance even more other-worldly.

WET LEG frankie alums and ultra-cool folk, Isle of Wight’s Wet Leg offered up a set that was equal parts rock show and religious experience. Playing a mix of their first and second album, the punters who had the pleasure of catching them couldn’t help but scream every lyric to “mangetout” – including us.

CHAPPELL ROAN The people’s very own mid-west princess did not disappoint. Somehow, Chappell Roan exceeded even sky-high expectations. Outfit changes, art gallery-worthy make-up, crowd interaction, and the most gothic-looking stage we ever did see, Ms Mid-West Princess herself was hot to go.
