simon weller’s barbershops of south africa
Take a peek at these hair salons, where cute meets badass.
In South African townships, barbershops aren’t just a place to get a snip and/or shave – they’re where people go to chill out, catch up on all the local goss and take in some radcore artwork by local chaps and lasses, who couldn’t give two hoots about art school techniques or typographical rules.
Shutterbug Simon Weller went in to explore this neck of the woods with a mate as a guide, and took these snaps (along with many more) for his photographic book. Throughout the process he remained as unobtrusive as possible, using just a small rangefinder camera and available light. Like Simon, we’re a wee bit smitten with the DIY artwork, 2Pac fresco and slogans like “tigers don’t cry.” Enjoy!
