thought-provoking paintings by chelsea gustafsson
There’s something oddly comforting about Barwon Heads artist Chelsea Gustafsson’s paintings, upon initial inspection. Perhaps it’s the familiar objects that she includes in her works, like the plastic green chair you’d find in every Australian family’s backyard, or the milk-crate-turned-table that you’d spy in every student sharehouse, or the soft colour palettes and lighting. But then you notice the bits of trash that you’d find in tangled clusters on the beach, and the slightly unsettling way that miscellaneous objects have been arranged.
Chelsea’s still life paintings explore themes like the environment and consumerism, as well as the everyday habits of humans. And aside from being rather thought-provoking, they're also very bloody good (we can't believe that image of trash is an oil painting, rather than a photograph).
