the surreal and whimsical collages of julie liger-belair
Whenever we look back on the (mostly grouchy-looking) faces of the past, it’s fascinating to wonder about the lives of the people behind the black-and-white photography. Julie Liger-Belair, a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist who has a keen interest in surrealism, places these stern, Victorian-era faces within beautiful and vibrant landscapes, helping our grumpy ancestors look a little bit more playful than they were probably letting on.
Julie uses her rad collaging skills to combine irony and seriousness, which she says allows her to “tell a story about the disconnect between our public and private selves”. Her art is simply extraordinary, so pop over to her online portfolio to see all the cool stuff she’s done. Or, check out her Instagram to keep up with all her latest creative pursuits.
