sue-ching lascelles is auctioning off artist-painted dresses for a good cause
Brisbane textile artist Sue-Ching Lascelles is back again with her Close to my Heart project, and this time she’s enlisted local artists Claire Ritchie, Luke John Matthew Arnold, Shuh Lee, Sophie Beer, Louise Meuwissen and Emily McDuff to come along for the ride.
Last year, Sue-Ching created five amazing frocks using tea towels and donated fabric. The dresses were then auctioned off to support asylum seekers and women in Afghanistan.
Sue-Ching has this year invited artists to each decorate a panel of fabric, which she then transformed into six fun, floaty dresses. The dresses will once again be auctioned off – this time to support two rad organisations that advocate for domestic violence survivors: Beyond DV and Full Stop Australia.

The dresses have been modelled by survivors Jade McDonald and Juliana Mantilla, making the project even more special. “Beyond DV has been amazing at helping me get my confidence back and my belief in myself that I am worthy,” Jade says. “They’ve taught us useful skills to get back into the workforce, and financial management skills like how to budget. I’ve made so many friends through Beyond DV. They continue to be such a great support network.”
“Sometimes in a relationship, when you’re doubting if you’re going to be OK, you stay because you’re afraid of the future, you’re afraid of being by yourself and you’re afraid of the consequences,” Juliana adds. “But once I was out and able to look back, for me, it was the best decision I could ever make. I now believe I am able to do anything that I apply myself to.”
The online auction will take place from November 16th – 20th, so keep an eye on the auction website and Sue-Ching’s Instagram for updates.
