spy neryl walker’s playful paintings of all things ‘ladylike’
Looking at Neryl Walker's art, you can just tell that the women and femmes in them are as bold and as fearless as the art itself. Featuring striking lasses that seem like they’ve stepped straight out of a cheeky 1950s magazine ad, Neryl’s series of badasses feature reinterpretations of what it means to be “ladylike”.

The graphic designer, illustrator and artist is bringing these striking ladies to life in a solo exhibition – ironically titled Ladylike – on display in Melbourne/Naarm at Outre Gallery from April 24th to May 18th. “Women are constantly juggling expectations around how they should show up in the world,” Neryl says about the inspiration behind Ladylike. “This show centres around the language used to define women – words that subtly police and diminish their actions.”
If you’re in the neighbourhood, make sure to swing past Outre and feast your eyes on Neryl’s collection of paintings, silhouette cutouts and even a hand-tufted rug. Fret not if you can’t make it to the show – you can always take a gander at Neryl’s art and designs over on her website.
