Classic needlepoint tapestries tend to depict quaint scenes like birds and flowers, or a cottage atop rolling green hills. While that’s all well and good, it’s nice to see someone shaking up the traditional craft. Soda Vital is a French shop doing exactly this. Through their Canevas Fatal project, they team up with a host of talented artists and design vibrant, DIY needlepoint kits. You can, for example, choose to stitch a portrait of a foxy lady in flaming boots, or a magical castle on an island. Each limited-edition kit comes with a canvas (the art is printed on top as a guide), a needle and a set of instructions. You’ll have to buy your own yarn, but that also gives you the freedom to experiment with colours, if you feel so inclined. Once stitched up, your final tapestry looks pretty damn swish in a frame.
