maya varadaraj’s curious collages
Maya Varadaraj is the kind of artist who chooses her medium based on the concept she wants to explore. It’s why you’ll find her work spread across paintings, installations, drawings and whatever else she puts her mind to. Her foray into collage is more recent, and came about when she was pulling apart and reassembling domestic appliances for an installation. Collage, she realised, was the exact same process, only with paper rather than machines. To make her collage series, Maya gathered up popular calendar advertisements from pre-independence India and cut them into mandala-like patterns. The process is Maya's way of dissecting the narrow representation of women, and her final images reflect the ways in which they are treated like machines. To see more, head to her portfolio over here.
