marianne huotari’s wall hangings are not what they seem

By

You wouldn’t know it at first, but these shaggy wall rugs are not made from wool or any other kind of colourful textile – and they’re certainly not soft or cosy. These impressive pieces, made by Finnish artist Marianne Huotari, are actually ceramic.

Marianne’s intricate wall hangings are based on ryijy – a type of traditional Finnish long-tufted rug. She creates the ‘tufts’ by carefully crafting hundreds of ceramic beads and stitching them onto a metal frame using wire. Pretty cool, eh? While you wouldn't catch us trying to snuggle up to one of Marianne's shaggy creations, we'd be more than happy to pop one on our wall to admire.
