Liminal spaces are often described as eerie, surreal and unsettling empty spaces devoid of life that commonly depict a transitional location between one place to another. Anyone who has been on the internet long enough is well-versed in the creepy aesthetic of ‘the backrooms’ and how they’ve helped cultivate fears of barren, man-made landscapes. However, the same cannot be said for Kohl Donnelly’s photography, which gives the once-feared liminal space a soft elegance and charm for us all to appreciate.
Kohl is a New Jersey-native and grew up in a quiet suburban town that he describes as having a “sense of stillness” that repeats itself through his photos. The majority of his work features empty locations surrounded by fluorescent lights which are then amplified by the pitch-black night, and they’re pretty dang dreamy to get lost in.
