han cao’s embroidered photographs

By

Peep the wry, whimsical works of Palm Springs-based fibre artist Han Cao, who has spent the last few months embroidering cheerful flower masks onto folks in antique photographs. They’re part of Han’s sold-out “Quarantine Collection”, which celebrates the ways individuals have to work together to protect and save lives. Han’s larger body of work uses the same technique of stitching thread directly onto vintage photos she finds at flea markets and antique stores from all over the world. Sometimes she embroiders people into animals or flowers, or gives retro holiday snaps a colourful makeover. Hans says it’s her way of bringing new life to the past and we certainly dig it.
