genesis belanger’s mind-bending sculptures

You’ve seen a banana before (we hope that’s not too bold to assume), and a human hand, a high heel shoe… but never quite like this. New York-based artist Genesis Belanger creates pieces using seemingly everyday objects to create moody, sometimes unsettling work: dismembered hands rest on a tableware setting alongside vases, flowers, a deflated balloon. In another, a picnic rug is splayed over a chaise-lounge, half-eaten fruit strewn across it. Her latest sculptures are rounded, elegant, with muted colours – we know these aren’t real human hands. In a way, they’re very sweet. So why this discomfort? What does it all mean? These are eternal questions for modern artists that they don’t owe us, really. She’s nailed the tension and we can’t wait to see what she does next. Check out more by swinging past her Instagram.
