drippy, droopy ceramics by philip kupferschmidt

If you’ve ever attended a beginners ceramics class, you might have been told about the importance of symmetry and smooth lines. The professionals, of course, know that rules are meant to be broken, which is why we can’t get enough of Philip Kupferschmidt’s delightfully droopy pieces.

A purple vase is covered in gloops of all shapes and sizes, giving the illusion that someone has accidentally spilt a tin of paint directly onto it. Other pieces are deliberately asymmetrical, leaning to one side with a soft bend that looks almost like a human torso leaning over. Mugs with metallic smiles are adorned with perfect droplets – his playful work is bound to brighten up any shelf.

The California-based artist says he’s interested in exploring unique approaches to ceramics, and he’s doing exactly that (SUPER well, we reckon). Take a look here.
