chase middleton’s unsettling snaps
Australian-born, New York-based photographer Chase Middleton snaps scenes that, upon first glance, feel familiar. Look a little longer, though, and the strange images become disturbing. In her series Terminal Mystery and Nostalgia for the Mud, Chase captures strangers in old, carpeted rooms with little furniture or strange décor. Her subjects often adopt an awkward pose or, if their faces are visible, a vacant expression.
The shutterbug says her work explores everything from ritualistic gatherings to “the heightened drama of myth in the domestic uncanny”.
“I use photography as a vehicle to enter into an unsettling world where it is uncertain whether one is viewing a glimpse of an imagined afterlife, alternate reality, or if it is the simple recording of everyday banality," she tells Fisheye Magazine.
