watch mums read touching letters from their children in lockdown

Major tearjerker alert!

There’s something special about mailing off a heartfelt letter, especially in the socially distant age of constant texts and video calls. For filmmaker Charlotte Mungomery, putting pen to paper is warm and intimate – a tangible form of connection when we can’t physically touch. While driving back home to Queensland from Sydney just before the border closure, Charlotte had a flash of inspiration: why not deliver handwritten letters to mums from their children who were either quarantining, overseas or interstate?

Charlotte visited 12 mums throughout April, filming their reactions through the window as they read their children’s messages. The result is a touching and rather poetic short film, soundtracked by lovely music from Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres. We suggest grabbing the tissue box before you click play below because if you’re anything like us, you’ll be weeping by the end. (P.S. If you feel like writing to your mama, we happen to have some pretty paper and DIY envelopes in the latest issue).
