tunesday – get to know montaigne
Keep an eye out for the signer-songwriter's upcoming album, and tune into their latest track below.
How would you describe the jump from working under a label to now being fully independent? It can feel a bit overwhelming, but I keep reminding myself to take things one step at a time. I think one of the things I’m noticing right now is that when it feels like a failure has occurred, you can’t really blame it on anyone else. It’s easy to fall into thinking your career hinges on the content you post.
What are the best ways to get in a music-making mood? Reading, watching or playing something. I like the game Disco Elysium, the movie Sunshine or Grimes’ album Art Angels.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing? Working at a climbing gym, studying to be a horticulturist or something with animals.
Your new song is called “Talking Shit”. What topic could you talk shit about forever? People who don’t have the self-awareness to see that they’re the problem. That pisses me off.
If you were a Dungeons & Dragons character, what would your alignment be? Chaotic good.
What can you tell us about your upcoming album? It’s a call to keep on going. Specifically, my relationship with my mum and what led to me cutting contact.
Who – dead or alive – would you love to collab with? Utada Hikaru. I don’t know what on, but they’re amazing.
How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music? I want people to feel seen as not being the only person who has felt ashamed or undeserving.
Describe your ideal summer day. I guess it would be a 24-degree day, a picnic with friends in the shade, watching a movie at the cinema and eating a nice dinner with my partner. Not a day that happens often, but it sounds pretty damn good.
