We caught up with the alt-pop sweetheart to chat all things family, her younger self and her brand-spanking new album, 'Don't Take It To Heart'.

What do you do when you’re not making music? When I'm not making music, I'm in Wollongong/Woolyungah working for my sister’s event styling company or just sitting on my couch watching anime. I love to watch anime when I do literally anything.

I also absolutely love hanging out with my nephew and niece because they are just the two most amazing human beings on planet earth. I'm also obsessed with doing my makeup and nails – I feel like it's a great way to get my creative juices flowing when I'm not making music.

How do you think 16-year-old-you would feel about releasing your debut album? Honestly, 16-year-old me wouldn't be shocked because she went around telling everyone she was gonna be a famous singer-songwriter. There would still most likely be lots of grateful tears streaming down her face and she would be jumping up and down in the lounge room with mum. She would also be very grateful that we never had to go to university, because we hated school.

Do you have a favourite song from Don’t Take It To Heart? My mum keeps asking me which song would I say is my favourite and I still find it hard to answer. I love the storytelling in the song “Shrine”, but I also love how I pushed myself out of my comfort zone for “One Of A Kind”.

Then we have “Unsaid”, which is musically an ode to Post Malone as he was my favourite artist for a long period in my life. (He brought me out of a dark space of mind.) Now I'm thinking it could be “Port Royal (A Love Story)” because it’s about the ups and downs you have even in the most incredible relationship with the love of your life.

I hope that everyone who listens to the album has the same experience as me… unable to pick a favourite.

What was the first gig you ever played? The first gig I ever played was technically at an open-mic night, but the first real gig I did was at The Bank Hotel when I was 17 years old. The story is actually quite cute because my music teacher came to the show and told me that The Bank Hotel is where she met her husband. I wouldn't be where I am today without her. That moment solidified my desire to pursue a career in music – it was obviously meant to be.

When you’re not writing songs in the back of your mum’s car, where do you like to write? I love to write songs literally anywhere that I am comfortable, which could be a rug, a couch or maybe even my bed. I just love to be comfortable when writing a song because it can be very revealing sometimes, especially when writing about things I feel I'm unable to talk about.

How do you get yourself psyched up before a show? The only way I get psyched up before a show is to have my staple drink which is a Scotch and Coke. It's the drink my mum has always had and I feel like it lends me her strength when I drink it. I also love having a cute moment with a fan before the show because it reminds me why I am doing this.

What’s your go-to song for when you’re driving around with the windows down? My go-to song when driving with the windows down always changes because I am mainly a passenger princess, but when I am driving on my own and feeling depressed it's “You Only Live Once” by The Strokes.

What is one thing you try not to take to heart? I try to not take anything to heart, especially people’s opinions of me – but I always end up doing it. I literally take everything to heart.

Keep up with merci, mercy this-a-way.
