tunesday – fill in the blanks with thelma plum
Ahead of taking on the mid-winter magic of Tassie’s Dark Mofo, we sat down for a chinwag with indie-pop royalty, Thelma Plum.
The first thing I did when I woke up this morning was…Make a coffee on my percolator and ate Vegemite on toast.
My favourite song from I’m Sorry, Now Say It Back is…It changes all the time depending on audience reaction or response. At the moment it is “Nobody's Baby” during the tour because it's fun to play live. And it's about horses!
One thing I’ll never be sorry for is…My strong sense of justice.
If I wasn’t making music, I would be…Maybe doing something to do with animals – somebody who gets to be around them all of the time. Actually, I would work in Pesto's enclosure in Melbourne/Naarm! I got to meet him and it was incredible. I went into his enclosure and it was incredible. He was honestly molting a little bit, so he didn't really look like he looked on the internet, but I didn’t mind – he was great.
I’m taking my album on the road to regional spots because…It's important to me that we toured to regional areas. It has honestly felt like a bit of an exchange – it feels like a bit of a shared experience. I know that in a lot of these regional areas there's not five different shows every night of the week, so it feels more intimate and a little bit more special when you bring shows out that way. It feels very community-minded and community-strengthening.
Especially being a young kid in a regional town, I think it can sometimes feel quite isolating. I often lived with my grandparents when I was growing up and they lived in the country in the middle of nowhere. I think it can be quite fun to have artists come to town that maybe wouldn't normally. When I was a kid, it was often older country artists that would come to town (which I loved) or opera in the paddock (which is also slay).
Plus, on this tour we have seen some of the most beautiful places. It’s like I've gone on a holiday. We were in the Kimberley recently and that was just amazing. We drove through this town the other day and we went to this op shop and I kept thinking, why do they have so much Babe memorabilia? There was Babe memorabilia absolutely everywhere in this tiny little town! Turns out, they filmed Babe there, so that was really cool.
The best thing about performing in Tasmania is…The food. The food is so yummy in Tasmania. I don't know what is going on down there, but everything is just so good. And also the vibe! When I was a teenager, I was on tour with Emma Louise and that was the first time I ever played in Tasmania. I played in Hobart/nipaluna and I walked out of my hotel room to go to the Salamanca Markets – which were just, again, unreal – and it was sleeting. I live in Brisbane/Magandjin – there is no sleeting here. I just remember being like, this is crazy. From the markets, we could see the top of Mount Wellington and it was just all white, and I thought that it was just unreal. I love playing in Tasmania.
The other event (beside my own) that I can’t wait to see at Dark Mofo is… Tierra Whack. They’re amazing. And I love The Horrors – they would be really fun to see. I saw Methyl Ethel was on the lineup, which is cool because they're friends of mine and I love them. I'd love to see Beth Gibbons as well. I will be devastated if I don't get to go see any other Dark Mofo shows because I know it will be really fun.
If you're in Launceston/kanamaluka this week, snag a ticket to see Thelma Plum perform at Dark Mofo. Otherwise, you can get a load of her top-notch tunes down below.
