The singer-songwriter's latest single, "4EVA", is out now.

Happy Tuesday, folks! We were pretty stoked to have had a chat with local R&B and soul musician Thndo, who lets us in onto her creative process, inspirations and how her personal experiences help shape her writing.

Who are the biggest influences of your sound? My inspiration comes from many different places which is how I create and perform so many different styles of music. Currently, I’m listening to Lalah Hathaway, Robert Glasper and Sade but I’ll pivot to Fallout Boy, Hoobastank or The Script when I’m writing my next record. Just depends on how I feel.

How do you get the inspiration juices flowing? Ask my closest people challenging questions. Their responses always stir up an emotional reaction and into a song it goes.

Do you prefer performing or songwriting? I love them both, the scales tip based on how I feel at the time. As I write this song, writing is my vibe at the moment.

When did you realise that music is your calling? When I watched a recorded performance of Freddie Mercury conducting the audience at Live Aid.

What are the main themes behind your recent EP, Life in Colour? Life in Colour is about my experience of growing up black in Australia. It’s introspection and celebration of finally owning my black identity.

How do you feel about using music to explore pretty deep topics? I believe music is universally understood and felt so it’s definitely the easiest way to address discourse and talk about hard topics. It feels like the safest weigh to call out stuff I don’t like.

Anything new we should look out for? My album Lessons in Love is on its way…
