The New Zealand duo’s otherworldly record examines very real emotions.

If B-grade sci-fi flicks from the ’60s and atmospheric synth are your thing, then you’ll probably dig indie-pop outfit BROODS’ fourth album, Space Island. The record isn’t exactly about aliens and rocket ships, though. It deals with the pain that vocalist Georgia Nott (one half of the sibling duo) went through during her divorce. “One thing about the experience of grief is that it makes you feel like you’re a bit out of orbit, or isolated in a very big feeling,” she says. “The more we figured out the strange logic of Space Island, the more the music started to reflect what was happening in the lyrics.” We recommend giving the radiant new tracks a listen below.
