tunesday – bec sandridge interview

By

We had a little chat with singer Bec Sandridge about toast, tunes and the man who tickled her feet.

There’s one kind of disco track that we can all get on board with, and that’s the kind that tells someone to go stuff themselves. Bec Sandridge’s “You’re a Fucking Joke” is exactly that track (it also happens to be exceptionally boogie-licious). We had a little chat with the Sydney singer ahead of her national tour, and found out a whole bunch of reasons why we’d like to be her friend.

When did you first know you wanted to be a musician? I bought a hideous blue acoustic guitar off eBay and I think that was “the moment”. I then proceeded to learn the entire catalogue of Blink 182.

Tell us a bit about your songwriting process. Generally, I just mumble little things into my voice memo app and go from there, but recently I lost my phone in an Uber. So at the moment, I’m writing via Garage Band and from little scribbles of words in my diary.

What’s the strangest thing that’s inspired a song? Once a man tickled my feet in a hostel. He then proceeded to ask if I was engaged. Somehow I was inspired to write a song from that.

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why? Stevie Nicks. She’s a dreamboat, and she’s written most of my favourite sad boogies.

What’s your best non-musical skill? I like to bake cookies and eat them.

When are you at your most creative? When I’m driving, listening to Smooth FM (specifically Richard Mercer’s voice).

Where do you feel most at home? Anywhere where I get to hang in my tracksuit. Or Glasgow.

What do you cook when you want to impress someone? Probably Vegemite toast. The right butter to Vegemite ratio is crucial.

Describe a typical Bec Sandridge show, please. Lots of velvet tracksuits. Lots of lunges. Lots of disco drums.

What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far in 2016? Cuddles are key.
