tunesday – a chinwag with country star lainey wilson
Lainey chats about her creative process and the country music scene.
What do you love the most about country music? It was the soundtrack to my childhood, and is still the soundtrack to my life today. I eat, sleep and breathe it.
Why do you think there’s been a resurgence in country music? I think everybody is craving realness and honesty, and I think that’s what country music brings.
What were the main inspirations behind your latest album, Whirlwind? During a time in my life that was changing fast, I was holding on to anything that helped me keep my feet on the ground. The songs for Whirlwind were made during a time of my life that was changing every single day.
How long did it take to complete the album? It took me a little over two years because we had started writing for Whirlwind before my last record, Bell Bottom Country, came out.
Please describe the creative process behind this album. There’s a little bit of everything in there because all my band members are from different genres of music. They’re the ones who were riding around with me in a van in the earliest days, and I feel like we’ve really taken the time to get to know each other’s stories. You can hear that in this record.
What was it like performing here in Australia? I felt right at home. I got to drink beer out of a boot! Being from a town of 180 people, it was special to see we’re a lot more alike than people think.
Apart from a cowboy hat, what’s your go-to outfit accessory? I live in my Wranglers. They’re the jeans I grew up in, and they’re still my go-tos. Beyond that, my favourite accessories are my bolo ties and my jewellery, especially my turquoise because it’s my favourite colour.
