travel the world by giving these five shows a watch
Forget the plane, cosy up on the couch for an international trip across the globe instead.
We reckon that you lovely readers feel the exact same way about travelling that we do: it can be as fun and exciting as it is expensive and tiring (not to mention lugging a huge suitcase around isn't exactly the pinnacle of glamour).
To help soothe your travel woes – or maybe even inspire your next trip – we've jotted down a neato list of some of our favourite TV shows that highlight some of the coolest places all over the world, from The Big Apple all the way down to Mother Russia.
NEW YORK CITY: BROAD CITY When it comes to The City That Never Sleeps (why does NYC have so many dang nicknames!?), there are more than a handful of shows that highlight the city's unique character. Sure, we could've included uber-glamourous examples like Mad Men, Sex and the City or Gossip Girl, but if there's any show that accurately portrays the wildly unpredictable nature of New York, it's Broad City. After all, when was the last time Carrie Bradshaw had to smuggle weed in period-stained pants to get on a plane? If you want a show that accurately depicts just how bonkers New York City is, listen to Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson: they know their stuff.
NORTHERN IRELAND: DERRY GIRLS Ah, Derry Girls. It's a show we could watch for hours upon hours and quote daily – and even with only three seasons under its belt, it's clearly made a mark on pop culture. Set in the 1990s during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, this comedy doesn't shy away from the hardships faced during this time (including regular bomb threats and armed soldiers stationed everywhere) but still keeps it's focus onto the rag-tag team of friends who endure all the trials and tribulations of teenage-hood. We could gab for hours (like Uncle Colm) about how bloody fantastic this show is, but we have a safe feeling that whoever's reading this already has seen every episode at least twice. It's good craic!
RUSSIA: THE GREAT While modern-day Russia isn't exactly known for having any royalty kicking about in Moscow these days, this satirical and "occasionally true" historical comedy-drama set in the 18th-Century puts the aristocracy back in the limelight. The Great features Elle Fanning as the eponymous Catherine the Great (with a lot of artistic liberties) and her incredible reign, as well as Nicholas Hoult as her husband Peter III of Russia. It's one of life's great travesties that this top-notch period drama was cancelled, but don't let that sway you: give it a watch regardless, since the three seasons we got to see were so freaking good.
MEXICO: ACAPULCO If you're in the mood for super-sunny shots with a dash of heartwarming wholesome-ness, look no further than Acapulco: think if The White Lotus and Ted Lasso had a neon-coloured baby. Set in the 80s (and draped in it's signature and hardly-subtle colour palette), the show follows Máximo Gallardo recounting his humble beginnings working as a pool boy at Las Colinas Resort before becoming a big-shot mogul in Miami. It's bright, bubbly and maybe veers a little too close to the soapy side, but honestly, who doesn't love a touch of the dramatics?
JAPAN: SHŌGUN Fancy another glitsy historical epic set in centuries past? Shōgun has what you're after (a word to the wise: it doesn't shy away from the more ugly parts of history – both literally and figuratevly). The series, set in 16th Century Japan, is based on the 1975 novel of the same name that follows the meeting and relationships built between an English sailor being shipwrecked in Japan as well as the powerful Lord Toranaga and Lady Mariko. For fans of Game of Thrones still reeling after the series' flop of a final season, we recommend taking a gander at this one whenever you get the chance.
We hope you enjoyed our list of TV shows set around the world. While we have you, why not spy our list of novels?
