We really cannot recommend this festival any more highly. This Is Not Art (or as it is lovingly nicknamed, 'Tina') is one of our favourite events of the year.

We really cannot recommend this festival any more highly. This Is Not Art (or as it is lovingly nicknamed, 'Tina') is one of our favourite events of the year. It is run as a collaboration between four sub-festivals including National Young Writer's Festival, Critical Animals, Electrofringe and Crack Theatre Festival. So Newcastle suddenly becomes overwhelmed not only by wordsmiths, but also with painters, theatre folk, comedians and musicians. The highlight last year was definitely the Annual Spelling Bee that frankie man Benjamin Law and Michaela McGuire hosted. Trying to spell the names of dinosaurs after consuming a jug or three of cider was no easy feat. The Spelling Bee returns this year, amoungst a diverse program of over 250 acts. Seriously, if you're in the area and a writely type, it's a great excuse to listen to some of your favourite authors speak, attend workshops, lounge on the beach and drink a lot of ginger beer. We're also pretty excited about this year's zine fair, which is happening on October 2nd. It's all on from September 29th to October 3rd and its all free. Accomodation in the city books out fast though so quick sticks!
