Switching on your desk lamp just became a smidge cooler, thanks to the magnetic balls in this clever new device.

The desk lamp. An everyday object, to be sure. But a little less everyday is the Heng Balance Lamp. The switch is controlled by two wooden balls. When you lift the lower one, it hovers mid-air, just like it’s levitating. How? Simple. The balls are magnetised. When they’re close to each other and the balance is just right, the lamp lights up. Cool, huh? Right now, the Heng is at the prototype stage, but designer Li Zanwen has big plans for this little beauty, and we look forward to the day that we can have one for ourselves and play with it for hours on end, like a cat with a piece of string.
