the frankie guide to hair personalities
Are you a “I’ll wash it tomorrow” optimist or a self-care romantic?
Most of us don’t have one hair personality, we have a few. Of course, we all have individual colour, thickness, type, etc, but there’s also our hair moods – or how we interact with our locks. And unless you have control over the weather, your energy levels and all external life factors, this can change throughout the week. Maybe on Monday you’re a heatless curl expert, but by Thursday you’re repping slick-back buns only? That is A-OK!
We put together a celebration of the many hair personalities we tap into throughout the week and recommended a few trusty bits and bobs for each one.
THE “I’LL WASH IT TOMORROW” OPTIMIST Today isn't wash day. Tomorrow is wash day. (Tomorrow has been wash day for the past three days, but that's not important right now.) Sometimes getting in the shower is just too much and we get it! The good news is that a little refresh can go a surprisingly long way. A quick spritz of dry shampoo and a few passes with a favourite hairbrush can buy you enough time to continue living in blissful denial until that wash day finally arrives, where you can crank out the real shampoo.
THE HEATLESS CURL ENTHUSIAST You’ve watched countless tutorials that begin with the words, "Trust me on this." You own rollers and you understand the phrase "setting time". You have considered sleeping in something slightly uncomfortable in pursuit of excellent morning hair. Whether you're experimenting with a heatless roller, sleep-in rollers or wave-setting clips, there's something deeply satisfying about waking up and discovering your overnight efforts have all paid off.
THE SELF-CARE ROMANTIC Washing your hair isn't a task – it's an event. This personality enjoys the process of washing your hair (in an ‘everything shower’, of course) almost as much as the result. A shampoo brush becomes a DIY scalp massage. Hair conditioner (particularly this vanilla and violet-scented leave-in one) feels like a thoughtful act of future planning. Hair oil is applied like you’re a Michelin-starred chef with a bottle of squeezy olive oil. It's less about achieving a particular look and more about carving out 10 (or maybe 30) delightful minutes in a day that may otherwise involve emails, errands and remembering why you walked into a room.
THE SLICK-BUN QUEEN There is a meeting in 10 minutes or a dinner reservation in 20, and you’ve just been to the gym or you’re having a day when not a single hair on your head is behaving. You don’t panic – you know exactly what the remedy is. Armed with a smoothing brush, a few bobby pins and a trusty wax stick, you know that sometimes the best solution is to brush it all back in a bun and deal with it another day.
THE FREQUENT FLYER The way you pack your check-in luggage could be studied as an artform. Whether it's a weekend away, an interstate work trip or a Euro-summer escape, you know exactly what earns a place in your luggage: travel-sized essentials, compact hair straighteners and haircare products that work hard without taking up valuable suitcase real estate.
THE HUMIDITY EMBRACER You understand that certain weather conditions (and maybe just entire continents) require compromise. You accept that it’s all about embracing texture, applying a little anti-frizz serum, religiously using a diffuser with your hair dryer and working with what nature has provided (or forced upon you).
The truth is, most of us embrace a few of these personalities at various points throughout the week (or, let's be honest, before lunch). One day we're sleeping in rollers and researching hair oils… the next we're throwing it in a top knot and hoping nobody asks questions. Hair personalities come and go, but that's part of the fun. Imagine if every day was a good hair day? Sounds boring to us.
