sophie aguilera’s ceramics are too good to be true

This sculptor is bringing everyday objects to life with cheeky reinterpretations.

Fancy a piece of fruit? How about a pillow to slouch on? Maybe a bunch of flowers to brighten your room? Well, Sophie Aguilera can’t help you with any of that – but she can sure as hell trick you into thinking she can.

The Spanish artist’s ceramic still-life sculpture collection includes all the little bits and bobs you might find around your house. From vases of flowers balancing atop pillow stacks to a pile of clean washing falling victim to a spilt coffee cup, these pieces are as jaw-droppingly realistic as they are mildly anxiety-inducing. A particular stand-out from Sophie’s work includes a bowl of oranges and lemons that would trick any zest-craving passerby into grabbing some citrus for the road – ants and all.

Based in Barcelona, Sophie says that she has long been fascinated with the possibilities of ceramics. While much of her work is riffing off scenes from everyday life – albeit sometimes with a cheeky twist or two – Sophie also isn’t afraid to venture into the abstract. We’re talking hearts (the bodily kind) bursting with flora, rats donning bouquets, a hand crawling out of a seashell to hold onto a single lily – you get the gist.

Prepare to be fooled by Sophie’s ceramics by taking a gander at them here.
