Nienke Hoogvliet is using seaweed to make rather elegant (and sustainable) home textiles. Her first seaweed-based creation was Sea Me – a rug she made from sea algae yarn, knotted by hand in an old fishing net (pictured just below). Since then, the Netherlands-based designer has continued exploring how one can use seaweed. For her Sea Me collection, which includes a table and chair, Nienke made chair seating from seaweed yarn and dyed the eco-friendly fabric with seaweed, too. Turns out seaweed generates manifold colours of dye: greens, browns, greys, and even pinks and purples. Who’d have thought it? To find out more, head over to Nienke’s website.
