This touching exhibition attempts to simulate what it’s like to be deaf.
There are some facts that we don’t read a great deal about, like the fact that one in six Australians will experience some form of hearing loss in their lives. Thankfully, local shutterbug Kate Disher-Quill (who happens to be hearing-impaired herself) is doing something to change all that. Her photo series, Right Hear, Right Now, explores various aspects of deafness, from hearing aids and cochlear implants to lip-reading and Auslan, as well as some personal stories of overcoming insecurities and celebrating differences.
The images are on display at Melbourne’s No Vacancy Gallery, where you’ll be treated to a full sensory experience that attempts to simulate what it’s like to be deaf. Head down for the official opening at 6pm tonight, or get along before the exhibition closes on Sunday August 28th.
