There's always the foolproof flowers-chocolate-perfume move, of course, but with so many nifty bits and bobs up for grabs, why not surprise your mum by giving the classics a bit of a twist?

It's Mother's Day next week, which means it's time to summon every ounce of your inner golden child. Our motherly types are pretty darn special ladies, and a carefully selected treat or two will show just how much you care. There's always the foolproof flowers-chocolate-perfume move, of course, but with so many nifty bits and bobs up for grabs, why not surprise your mum by giving the classics a bit of a twist?

Like surrogate children we've done some of the searching for you and compiled a list of fab cards, pressies and DIYs to make your mama smile with delight.

cards-1

(clockwise from top left)

1. You can never go wrong with the tried-and-true floral theme, and this dainty hand-illustrated design takes tradition to a prettier place.

2. We like this card bear-y much. You can use that gag in your message, if you'd like.

3. For the offspring of a greenie, how about this floral heart design? It's printed with soy inks and made from 60% tree-free recycled paper, so you'll be safe in the knowledge your eco-conscience is intact.

4. It's sweet without the sickly aftertaste, it's just the right amount of punny, and it's ticking allsorts of boxes for the type of card that'll earn you serious brownie points from ma.

5. Some mother-child imagery will bring a tear to mum's eye, because you'll always be a vulnerable mini person frolicking in the daisies to her.

6. A little appreciation for talking you out of a career as a circus acrobat will never go astray. This card gives your mum assurance that she's done a tip-top job. Bravo!

gifts

1. Your mum wants you to give her the frankie gift paper book for Mother's Day, she's just too polite to come out and ask. Lucky you can pop into your local newsagent and pick one up, no hassle.

2. All mothers know there's no such thing as too much soap. Top up their stash and ditch the home brand with some pleasantly scented natural goodies from Old Faithful.

3. Once you pin it, it's official. She did put up with you in your bratty hair dyeing, dunce dating teen years, after all.

4. We can't guarantee it, but these Orla Kiely storage bowls may result in an endless stream of delicious home-cooked tidbits, delivered from mama's stove direct to your fridge.

5. Mother's Day and flowers go together like apple and a sprinkling of cinnamon, but you can give the ol' favourite a twist by signing ma up to these online flower arranging classes.

6. You love tea. Your mum loves tea. Why not splash out on some of the good stuff and sip on a cuppa together? It's a great excuse for some quality bonding time, which is the best present you could give her, truth be told.

7. Give the gift of beautiful flowers, plus a nifty ikebana stone to help mum arrange them in the most artful of ways. You'll get bonus marks for attention to detail, and those things have a pretty long-lasting shelf life.

DIY

1. Your mum probably still has all your pre-school art stashed somewhere – now it's time to up the ante. This craft project takes an op shop flower print and turns it into a one-off work of art through the power of blobbing paint. Easy as.

2. Spoon, meet paint. Paint, meet spoon. Mum, meet awesome present your child just whipped up for you because he or she is ace, and presumably you are, too.

3. For a transportable eatable, how about a Pumpkin and Bee Pollen Cake? It must be healthy because it has bee pollen in it. And some vegetable. And mama didn't raise no fool.

4. Breakfast in bed is a Mother's Day classic. And as far as we know, there is no law against eating Raspberry Rose Souffle before 10am.

5. One thing we know for sure – mums love framed family pictures. It's in their job description. This little DIY shows how to scale down siblings and parents to a cross stitch pattern, so you can present her with an epic needlework portrait.

6. Glue and lace – you can do that, right? These prettied-up flowerpots couldn't be simpler (or cheaper) for a Mother's Day treat. Simply snaffle a succulent or two, chuck in some soil and voila – Mum's day is officially made.
