friday flicks – cosy films to watch this autumn

Grab some blankets, heat up some hot choccy and feast your eyes on these autumnal movies.

We reckon that autumn just so happens to be the best season. Summer is too hot, winter is too chilly and spring comes with hay fever, but autumn is just right – and we’re willing to die on this hill. To help get you all into the festive autumnal spirit we just so happened to find some lovely mellow movies for you cool folk to check out and love (especially if you’re wearing a snuggly jumper).

LITTLE WOMEN This 2019 coming-of-age period drama directed by Greta Gerwig is the seventh film adaption of Louisa May Alcott’s iconic 1868 novel, and we reckon that this version is the absolute best. It also happened to win a crapload of awards – except for Best Director for some reason – so it looks like we’re not the only lovers of this timeless portrayal of girlhood. Starring Saorise Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen as the main March sisters (Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth respectively), this flick follows their lives during the 19th century in Massachusetts amidst the American Civil War, while also having to deal with unrequited love, time-appropriate diseases and good old-fashioned misogyny. If this one isn’t already on your autumn watchlist then make sure to change that, pronto.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY There is objectively no other film on the planet that represents the orange-hued season better than this Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal classic. It’s a rom-com that, ever since its release back in 1989, has been lauded as one of the best movies in the entire genre that we still find ourselves quoting right here in the 21st century (we can't help but wonder about how many poor cafe's have had to deal with people recreating Meg's iconic fake orgasm over the years). There’s truly nothing we can say about this flick that hasn’t already been said, so we recommend asking your mum or dad why they love it instead – maybe that’ll give you a final push to give this classic flick a watch.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX Based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, this 2009 stop-motion animated movie is super-whimsical, quirky and filled to the brim with pretty visuals – which makes sense since the king of twee, Wes Anderson, directed it. Starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep and an ample number of other celebs, this warm-toned flick follows the adventures of the titular Mr. Fox and other woodland critters stealing from three notorious farmers, all adorned with Wes Anderson’s signature toasty colour palette.

THE HALF OF IT This Netflix movie is another tender coming-of-age story about the trials and tribulations of being a girl, with this one also focusing on the immigrant experience, queer crushes and self-acceptance. The film follows smart but quiet high schooler Ellie living in a small American town, where she makes extra cash by writing her classmates’ homework when she isn’t helping her father run the local train station. When Ellie is approached by a jock who asks her to write love letters to his (and her) crush is when things really start moving, leading to a complicated love triangle. It’s sweet without being saccharine, and it makes for a perfect watch for a cosy night in.

CAROL Frankly we would sit down with this wistful romance-drama any time of the year, but we think that it’s pretty perfect to watch when our quiet evenings involve light rain, chilly wind and all we want to do is stay indoors and yearn. Cate Blanchett and Mara Rooney star as an older woman going through a divorce and a young aspiring photographer (respectively) having an electric love affair in the early ‘50s. Directed by Todd Haynes, Carol is a movie that’ll most certainly make you cry, but we promise that this gorgeous flick is well worth all of the tears (just keep a tissue box close by).
