Some clever Portuguese designers have come up with the perfect solution to rainy day cabin fever.

As much as we welcome an opportunity to spend a guilt-free day indoors, wrapped in a quilt and eating chocolate spread straight from the jar, there comes a time on a rainy day when the cabin fever kicks in. At that point we just want to be able to amble calmly down the street, without fumbling with a brolly or doing mad dashes between the shelter of awnings.

Turns out some clever Portuguese designers have come up with the perfect solution. In the city of Agueda, a series of streets have been decorated with canopies of umbrellas, creating a niftily waterproof path to wander down - not to mention some incredible patterns in the sky. The colourful spectacle was created as part of an arts festival called Agitagueda, and though it may be shielding visitors from sunstroke rather than downpours, we're all for pitching this to our local councils as an annual winter installation.
