You probably had a pen pal at some point when you were younger. Maybe you sent fan mail to the Dawson’s Creek cast, or just a bunch of letters to Santa. Regardless, we bet it’s been quite a while since you sat down to write a real deal, pen-to-paper letter.
A worthwhile way to break that streak is by taking part in the Befriend A Child program – a project aiming to create positive connections between Australians and asylum seeker children living in detention. As well as doing your best to ease a little bit of their daily stress by offering up your friendship in a sticker-covered envelope, you could also spend quality time with a child face-to-face via the visiting program, or even direct your letter toward the government in a bid to lobby for change.
Little things like your voice – and a piece of paper with some chummy words and drawings on it – can make a big difference to someone’s day (or month, or year), and you can find out how to take part on the Befriend A Child website.
