Cintia Martin has been doing her thing for quite a while now, whipping up cute as pie imagery that could be straight out of a children's book. Which it just so happens to be, because the savvy artist has released three of her very own, chock full of her whimsical designs.

We got in touch with the sweet Spaniard to find out more about her life and work.



What is your name and how old are you? I am Cintia Martin, 42

Where were you born and where do you live now? I was born in Salamanca, a beautiful Castillian town that is known by its famous university. I live in the nearby Valladolid.

How does where you grew up and where you live now affect your art? What I like most about the cities in my region is the light and the deep blue sky in wintertime.

Please describe the space where you do most of your creation – whether it's your art studio or kitchen bench! I live and work in the same place, a flat within a XV century facade and an inner wooden structure dated 1879. When we came to live there we renovated it with the intention to preserve all its past magic, including the ghosts who peacefully share the house with us.

What kind of mediums do you use? Why do you choose to use these mediums? I employ all techniques at my reach, but mostly collage, as it forces me to follow straight lines and not get lost within the detail.

Is there a running theme to the work you create, or do you just make whatever comes to mind? I sometimes work over text or another writer's idea, but other times it's me who proposes an idea to a writer to develop. In my recent works my recurring worlds are always present: play, circus, home, nature and its bugs...

What kinds of ideas and things are you working on at the moment? A school agenda and a paper toy inspired by the circus.

Do you think people need to understand the artist's intention to appreciate the art? Not necessarily.

Which era of art do you appreciate the most? Theatre appeals to me a lot and I would like to create more works related to it.

What other budding artists do you love? I am interested in artists who have fun in approaching art and creation. I admire Alexander Calder, Joan Brossa, Joan Miro, Isidro Ferrer and Bruno Munari. As for illustrators, I like Violeta Lopiz, Adolfo Serra and Ana Pez.

What do you enjoy doing when not creating art? Eating out with friends, going to the cinema or theatre, seeing an art exhibition or riding my bike around my town.
