travel through the guatemalan highlands with this photography series

Juan Brenner’s latest photography Genesis is all about “becoming”. The Guatemalan photographer captures life in the Highlands as it unfolds around him. From a stack of brand-spanking-new caskets to a young girl’s Holy Communion, Juan’s lens is drawn to the waves of societal change rippling across the Guatemalan Highlands.

It’s not just the once-in-a-lifetime experiences that Juan places centre frame – the ordinariness of life’s happenings make sure to peek their head through his images, too. A cabinet of false teeth, yellow flowers reaching for the sun, gold chains glistening in the light – the idiosyncrasies of everyday life are as powerful as the show-stealing moments.

Juan draws links between the change of social structures in the Guatemalan Highlands with the change that is ignited by a new generation as they come of age. “The youth of the highlands is the first generation to effectively establish an intelligible dialogue with their contemporaries around the world,” he says on his website. "There is a vitality that springs from the territory itself, along with a splendor that always belonged to this group."

If you’re as in love with these images as we are, take a peep at the entirety of the photo series on Juan’s website here.
