mila zemliakova sews pensive animal sculptures
The best spots to ponder the meaning of life and other tricky questions: the shower (all that steam is great for clearing the mind); next to a cosy fire (those mesmerising flames can fuel all kinds of ideas); the woods (what’s more inspiring than nature itself?).
Belarusian artist Mila Zemliakova must agree on the latter, because she spends plenty of time surrounded by woodland trees and streams, while she perches her soft animal sculptures into positions not too dissimilar to Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker. Mila uses pre-loved textiles and wool to create the strange, whimsical creatures, that gaze thoughtfully into the abyss. Next time we have a perplexing issue to mull over, we might take a leaf from their book and make our way into the woods.
