The synth guru is back with his brand-spanking-new record, ‘Debt’, out this Friday. Below, he shares the 11 songs he was listening to as the album came together.
I feel like my listening habits have shifted since my last album; I have much less desire to listen to the entire world of recorded music at my fingertips. I would rather get properly obsessed with little micro-worlds and just have particular records on loop. These are some that I can’t shake, whether as headphone-listening, smashing out in the club, or both. Debt was a reaction to both of these worlds — wanting to make “small footprint” music that works either way.

ANNIE U R A BIRD BY M. QUAKE FT. JONINE STANDISH Incredible dubwise production from Melbourne/Naarm’s Tarquin Manek and Jonine from HTRK, doing a nearly unrecognisable Annie Lennox version. This 12” hasn’t left the bag.
STILL BY MURA MASA I got really into this loosie from Mura Masa last year – it’s deep, refined and doesn’t go too turbo.
ROCKMAN BY MK.GEE Look, I’m just another dude with a parasocial Mk.gee obsession – but you can’t deny that this is a perfect song. Or, near perfect. I made an extended edit with a bit more kick drum. More Mike on the dance floor.
COMPLETELY HALF BY BOLIS PUPUL Big, big fan of Charlotte & Bolis of course, but Bolis made a really beautiful solo record as a tribute to his family and his Hong Kong roots, and this song just sticks in my brain.
BETTER HATE BY JESSICA PRATT Love JP, and love her international DJ-circuit-adjacent bandmates. I saw their show in Melbourne and it was a masterclass in not saying too much, playing for the right amount of time, playing all the right notes, and being cool as fuck.
KISS U / KISS U (RICARDO VILLALOBOS REMIX) BY ELA MINUS AND DJ PYTHON Legendary collaboration and a stratospheric Ricky remix. Both essential and rinsed on the car stereo this past year.
JENNIFER PASTORAL BY JENNIFER VANILLA A deeply cool, modern New York cut that I’ve played out a bunch. A bit Sleeping Bag (Francois K on the mastering!) with bloghouse-era Brooklyn energy. No notes.
WHO CARES BY ANNA KAUFEN One of many treasured 12”s I bought from old friend and formative DJ Martin L a few years back. I always knew I loved these kinds of records, but didn’t have a good place to start — Martin put me ON. Cut-up, esoteric club music with heaps of personality. Who doesn’t wanna dance to this?!
DANG (ACAPELLA) BY CAROLINE POLACHEK Another perfect song. The full mix is almost too much to bear, so when Caroline dropped the acapella, I was happy to live in that little 2.45 minute world of ASMR vocal stim. Mary-Poppins-opened-up-the-purse.
KLARNETO BY JORG KUNING Jorg, King of the Frogs. This guy does not miss; a truly special producer. Klarneto was my anthem of 2023/2024 DJ sets, only to be replaced by “Skudde” off his latest EP.
BEAUT MOT PLAGE BY ISOLÉE Completely sideways track. The fact that this was a “big” club record in the early 2000s just shows how far we’ve fallen.
Keep your eyes peeled for Harvey Sutherland's Debt, coming out this October 10th.
