tunesday – get to know hot glue

Again and again and again.

You know those tunes that you just can’t stop listening to, hitting that replay button again and again? Melbourne/Naarm indie band Hot Glue’s latest album Again, Again is chock full of them – 10 songs to soundtrack a lifetime of changing seasons. The considered songwriting across the album places the human condition at the centre of it all, the fuzziness and grittiness of the sonic soundscape Hot Glue builds is like something to sink into. While you're here, you can sink into our chat with the band below, and get a load of Again, Again when Hot Glue tours it around the east coast on their first ever headline tour this May and June.

Tell us about Hot Glue and how the band came together. Lily Harnath: We are an indie-rock band from Melbourne, lately more inspired by shoegaze-y music. Pearl and I are siblings and started playing music together towards the end of high school when we both became interested in writing songs. We had a revolving door of band drummers for a couple of years before I started dating Henry – a psych-rock drummer – who eventually wormed his way into the band. Now we can’t imagine the band without him.

Describe your new album Again, Again in one sentence. Henry Lucas: Big rock fuzz guitars and earnest reflections on cycles and change.

What surprised you the most about making the album? Pearl Harnath: We sort of intuitively leant more into fuzzy guitars and the heaviness that we had only briefly explored before. I write on acoustic guitar so it always came as a shock to hear how good the songs sounded when we went full rock with it.

What’s one thing you can’t stop doing again and again? Lily: Listening to The Strokes.
Pearl: Overthinking.
Henry: Staying up until after midnight

Describe the perfect scene in which one should listen to Again, Again? Lily: Either a scorching hot summer day when you can’t do anything but sit in front of the fan OR a chilly day when it doesn’t stop softly raining and you’ve been doing a lot of ruminating.

Who would win in a fight, a spider or a minotaur? Pearl: If it’s OUR minotaur, I think the spider would win, no matter the size. But I think in general it would have to be a pretty big spider

How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music? Henry: We want people to feel a bit of catharsis, like they have somewhere to put feelings of angst and frustration.

What’s the thing you’re most excited about for your first headline tour? Lily: We’re most excited to play our first interstate shows. We’ll be playing in venues we’ve never even been to before, and we’ve got some great local support bands we’re pumped to share the stage with. Also really excited for people to know the album songs at our shows now that Again, Again is out!
