Want to know more about an issue or news story relating to Australian politics? Allow us to point you in the direction of Left Right Out – a brand-spanking-new podcast hosted by local journos (and absolute legends) Justine Landis-Hanley and Elfy Scott.

Each week, Elfy and Justine will answer questions about Aussie politics that have been sent in by the public, with the aim of making topics and news stories more accessible for young folks (and anyone else who wants to tune in). “We know what it's like to have questions about Australian politics and not feel like you have the space to have them answered,” Justine says. "Journalism is such a fast-moving beast, so this podcast is a space to pause; a space to ask those questions.”

Rather than being driven by the news cycle, the content covered in Left Right Out will depend solely on what the audience is curious about, Justine notes. “In a really cool way, it's democratising not only information, but news itself, and that makes me really happy."

The idea for the show was sparked by Elfy and Justine’s own experiences, and what Elfy describes as “a simmering passion for boiling down news topics and condensing them in a really accessible way”. The hosts also want to combat the rise of misinformation around political issues – particularly as the next federal election will be held in the coming months. “Being able to cut through that misinformation and give people answers to questions they have is such a valuable thing,” Justine says.

Topics the talented lasses are keen to talk about the most (so long as the audience asks about them, hint hint) include climate change and political corruption. And no question is too ‘silly’ – the pod is a safe space for everyone. No issue is too tedious or complex, either. “There are topics that, on the surface, can seem pretty dry and not very interesting, but once you have a little bit of a dig at them, I think you can make them pretty entertaining and accessible,” Elfy says. “I don't think there's anything that we would shy away from talking about.”
