peek inside three frankie illustrators’ bags
Do they keep it organised or invite a little chaos?
Ever peeked inside someone’s bag and felt like you got a glimpse inside their brain? We asked three illustrators to unzip theirs and share the bits, bobs and curiosities they can’t leave home without – sunscreen included, of course.
EIRIAN CHAPMAN
What’s in your bag? When I’m trying not to be a hot mess, I take my silver Bao Bao crossbody bag with me as it’s big enough to fit all my ‘emergency’ items in. This includes a tiny measuring tape, sketchbook, pilates socks, food thermos, bobby pins and one lone AirPod (why did they make them so slippery!?). What’s your favourite thing in your bag? A tennis ball. I was called ‘magnet hand’ at school because I am good at catching balls (don’t laugh). What’s the oldest thing in your bag? Gingham scrunchies I made when I first learnt how to sew eight years ago. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found in your bag? The Hermit tarot card. I rediscovered The Secret Language of Birthdays book that used to adorn every ’90s girls’ star-and-moon bedspread and The Hermit was my assigned birth card! Why do you keep sunscreen in your bag? Being part of the translucent community, I never leave home without a hat or sunscreen – even at night that moon can be pretty bright!
ALICE OEHR
What’s in your bag? Apart from my keys, wallet and phone, I like to have my comfort things – especially when I travel. Always water, a hat, sunglasses, lip balm, sunscreen, mints and often a novel and a sketchbook, so I can entertain myself anywhere. Usually headphones or earplugs. Sometimes I’ll also have a Sudoku book and some snacks, like a muesli bar or an apple. I am not a minimalist! What’s your favourite thing in your bag? My sketchbook is my most precious thing. What’s the oldest thing in your bag? I collect lots of ephemera from the places I go, so the bottom of my bag is filled with business cards, coasters, menus etc. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found in your bag? Shells, leaves or rocks from past holidays. Why do you keep sunscreen in your bag? I love sitting in the sun, so I always like to have full sun protection to enable me to do this impulsively. I couldn’t sit in the sun without sunscreen!

What’s in your bag? My iPad, sketchbook, books, perfume, tarot cards, yearly planner, keys, sun protection and crystals. There's always so much random junk too: old receipts, sand, leaves, feathers and I recently found an acorn in there too! I also always have my Loop ear plugs in a purse with my cards and lip balm. What’s your favourite thing in your bag? Photos of my partner and myself, as well as our 17-year-old German-Shepherd-cross-Pomeranian, Lemmy, who we recently had to say goodbye to. He was our entire world and his cheeky face always makes me smile. What’s the oldest thing in your bag? The front door key to my parents’ house. It gives me comfort if I'm feeling lost. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found in your bag? The acorn! Why do you keep sunscreen in your bag? I have a family history of skin cancer so it's really important to me that I'm always covered, even in winter. I also don't want to ruin all my tattoos!
