Learn how to revive your old garms by mending them or turning them into something totally new.

Fashionable types, rejoice! The PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival is back for another year. From March 3rd to 11th, dozens of venues across the city will host a huge line-up of runways, top-notch chit-chats, shopping events, exhibitions and live shows. (We highly recommend checking out the full program here.)

On top of all that, there'll be heaps of ace workshops that are focused on sustainable, upcycled and recycled fashion. They’ll arm you with all the skills you need to breathe life back into your sad old clothes, or to make your own from scratch. Read on for a few of our top picks.

RE-MAKE, COBURG NORTH
Got a tired garm that you just can’t bear to part with? Look no further! frankie friend Kitiya Palaskas is throwing a hands-on workshop where you will upcycle and repurpose old items of clothing using techniques like embroidery, embellishment and iron-on decals. Tickets are $65, which includes a few tasty snacks and bevs and all the crafting gear you need. Just bring along a garment that you’re keen to upcycle (although there will be some pre-loved items to choose from on the day, if you don’t want to tackle your own wardrobe just yet).

FASHION FIX, BRUNSWICK
At this free event, crafty folks from RMIT will help you mend or alter your neglected duds. Sewing supplies are provided, so all you need to bring to the workshop is something from your wardrobe that needs a little extra love and care (or perhaps a shorter hem). Find the deets here.

CARDIGANG, FITZROY
If you’ve been wanting to learn how to make your own cute knits, then listen up! The lovely people at Cardigang are hosting a knitting workshop and a crochet workshop at this year's festival. Both classes will teach you the art of the craft, and all the tools you need are provided. By the end of the lesson, you will have made your own colourful knitted or crocheted piece to keep. Each class will set you back $54. Nab a ticket to the crochet workshop here, and the knitting workshop here.

E.G.O, COLLINGWOOD
Head along to this free experimental workshop and you’ll learn how to zhuzh up your old duds with the help of talented designers and seamstresses, as well as stylist and workshop host Jaya Prisco. There are multiple sessions available, but you’ll need to register in order to nab a spot.

MEND OVER MATTERS, MALVERN
The Embroiderers Guild Victoria is here to teach you how to stitch your way to better outfits. Bring along some hole-y items (or make use of provided fabric) and learn the art of mending through creative stitching. If pretty threads take your fancy, head here for more info. Tickets will set you back between 10 and 15 bucks.

KNIT TOGETHER, MELBOURNE
This one is for the young’uns. Artist Drew Chan is hosting a full-day knitting workshop for knitters of all experience levels and aged from 14–25. The class will use an easy scarf pattern and loads of colourful yarn to cover all the basics of knitting. This handy event is free, but you’ve got to register to secure a seat (and a pair of knitting needles). Registrations will open on February 17th.
